Fitbusters: Spinach Wraps
It’s green. It looks healthy. Seems like the obvious choice, right? I have heard more and more people mention eating spinach wraps for lunch, and they are always shocked when I tell them the truth. A spinach wrap is nothing more than a white tortilla dyed greeen.
Yes. You read that correctly. A spinach wrap is the same as a white tortilla, but with food coloring added. It’s listed right here in the ingredients:
See “FD&C Yellow #5 and E&C Blue #1 Lake?” Remember, yellow and blue make green? There’s your “spinach” wrap. And, to put icing on the cake, it only has 2% OR LESS of spinach powder. Sigh. Their nutrition profiles are also pretty similar, but the spinach wrap has a slight benefit. It’s lower in sodium and higher in fiber, protein, Vitamin A, calcium, and iron.
So what’s the conclusion? The spinach wrap is slightly healthier than the white tortilla, but do not fool yourself into thinking that it is healthy. It is a regular ‘ol tortilla. Dyed green.
