Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of listening to Sean Combs, aka “Diddy,” deliver the commencement speech at Howard University’s graduation. Ever the party boy and entertainer, I had no idea what to expect. Outside of his record label, rap career, and awkward dance moves, Diddy is also known for his drive and ambition. I looked forward to hearing what he would say to a sea full of graduates ready to begin their journey into the real world.
Diddy had one main question to direct to the graduates. “Do you know how powerful you are?” he calmly but directly asked. The audience remained silent, waiting for his next statement. And he asked it again, letting the words sink in. After that simple, yet bold question, Diddy had my attention. I was captivated by this question, but not because I had never considered it. I was intrigued because it’s a question I normally wonder about other people.
So often, I wonder why we sell ourselves short. Remember when we were younger, and we thought all things were possible? We had these big dreams of what our lives would be, and no one could have convinced us otherwise. Then, as we grew older, we became more “realistic.” We began to think, I can’t do THIS because of THAT. I can’t be THIS because of THAT. We began talking ourselves out of more things than we’d talk ourselves into. We started to forget the potential for greatness that was so undeniable just years prior. What happened?!? Why do we settle for mediocrity?
So I ask you this question, do you know how powerful you are? Do you REMEMBER how powerful you are? Do you understand that you can achieve ANYTHING you decide to work hard enough to attain? Let’s stop settling. Let’s stop dragging ourselves to jobs we hate and truly work towards finding something that inspires us. Let’s stop allowing our health to deteriorate and finally focus on eating foods that are beneficial to our bodies. Let’s stop waiting for our lives to “start” and take full advantage of each day that we are given. This is your life. And you’ve been blessed with infinite power. Recognize it, realize it, and put it to work!
What have you allowed to get in the way of your own power? What will you do differently to use the power you’ve been given?
