The Pursuit of Happiness

March 15, 2016  |  By Joy Diggs

Let’s face it.  We live in a world where we are supposed live in a state of perpetual happiness. The continual mantra of “be thankful for what you have” leaves no room to ever feel like we should want something different. But sometimes, you need to face the fact that you are not happy, and it’s okay to admit that.

Too often, we remain in situations and circumstances in which we are not satisfied. Be it a dead-end job, an unfulfilling friendship, or a relationship gone awry, we stay because we are scared to admit that what we have isn’t quite enough. When you’ve invested time into something or someone, it can be hard to imagine what life would be like without them. And it can be even harder to conceptualize the steps necessary to bring about something different. But all of that is required to move on.

The bottom line is, yes, you should be thankful for what you have, but also realize it is okay to want more. It’s okay to look around your office and realize that you do not want to be there anymore. Because if you don’t truly admit that to yourself, how will you ever get to the point of looking for a job that you will truly enjoy? If you never stop and realize that the person you continue to call your friend doesn’t have your best interests at heart, how will you decide to start surrounding yourself with more positive people who are emotionally available when you need them?

Life is a series of decisions. And many times, the decision to be honest with yourself about your own wishes and desires can be the hardest one. If you are not happy and you desire for your situation to change, you need to be honest and admit that to yourself. And once you acknowledge that, you will put yourself in a better position to make changes.
