I don’t know if any other four words have ever killed as many aspirations as these four… “well, at least I…” What do I mean?
Have you ever set a goal, started making progress, and then stalled out before reaching the goal? Then, instead of pushing yourself to complete the goal, you stopped at, “well, at least I….?” You know this phrase. It doesn’t sound familiar? How about this:
“Well, at least I tried.”
“Well, at least I lost three pounds.”
“Well, at least I work out more than I used to.”
Now, don’t get me wrong. I’ll be the first one to tell you not to ever knock your progress, no matter how small. The problem comes when you use that progress to justify not continuing to strive toward the real goal. You know the one… the one that requires a little more effort, way more sacrifice, and a bigger step out of your comfort zone.
This week’s motivation is a small, gentle reminder to go beyond “at least.” You have more to give, so push a little harder. Think about what else you can do to move a little closer. Don’t stop yourself from progressing just because you’ve already made some progress. Finish! Complete the journey. Go forth, and conquer!
