Did you know before 1954, running a mile in under four minutes was thought to be impossible?
While I cannot fathom personally ever running a mile in four minutes, for years, experts thought it physiologically could not be done. So many athletes had tried and failed, so it became accepted that nobody could do it.
Roger Bannister was a top mile runner in college, and he decided to dedicate his training to breaking this barrier. He believed he could do it. And on May 6, 1954, he ran the mile race in 3:59.4, becoming the first person to accomplish this feat.
But the story does not stop there. Only a month and a half later, another runner broke Bannister’s record, running at 3:57.9. And within five years, twenty other runners had broken the four-mile mark. It wasn’t impossible- it just hadn’t been done.
The mind is an incredible thing, and it truly dictates what you can and can’t do based on your beliefs. What more could you be capable of if you just believed?
Sometimes, it takes someone else setting the bar for us to believe something can be done. Other times, we may become the trailblazer.
If there is something you want to achieve, plan and prepare for your success. It may require finding a role model, mentor, or coach who has been there, done that and can guide you in the right direction. Or, you may have to research and use other resources to figure out your own path.
But never discount your ideas and dreams as something that is beyond the realm of possibility. Anything is possible- you just haven’t done it yet!
